Porcelain Handpainted Floral Botanical Shell Cabinet Plates (7) & Bowls (2) Marked #761 in red ink. Have long been attributed to Spode.. Owner of very old age bought them as Spode. But have now confirmed these are Joseph Machin & Co. All individually handpainted with different flowers on each..

Moulded drop shell edge with very finely painted flowers on white ground surrounded by green border highlighted in gilt. I did once come across plates of this age with Flowers painted in this style & quality. That were attributed to Coalport. And proceeded to tell me.

Included will be 4 additional plates that have been damaged then repaired. Some Background: In the early 19th century Joseph Machin and Company were one of the principal manufacturers of china and earthenware rivaling makers such as Wedgwood, Spode Coalport and Minton. However, due to the bankruptcy of the Stoke-based factory in the late 1830s the name disappeared from public knowledge.

Their wares have always been popular with collectors. But were often wrongly cataloged as being by those makers whose names had survived.
