Despite its fine appearance, the clay feels somewhat dull. Nor is it as light as most Qing porcelain.
I have noticed this sort of clay on other bleu de Hue pieces. Perhaps it has something to do with the nature of bleu de Hue and the way it was made. Perhaps this bowl was not made in Jingdezhen, but in Vietnam using Vietnamese clay and different techniques. In any case, there is no doubt that it is of the period. The quality and style of the painting, the patina and corrosion to the metal rim and the dark colour of the hairlines ensure this. There is one cracked area with a metal repair. There is another cracked area with one loose piece, but is held by the metal rim. Additionally, there is one small hairline and one small firing crack.
The metal rim is somewhat rough/flaky in places. I must apply this manually.
